Former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Joseph W. Byrns was an important political leader in early twentieth-century Tennessee, serving in the Tennessee General Assembly and then fourteen terms in the U.S. Congress. The Marr and Holman Architectural Firm was established in 1910 in Nashville, Tennessee. Thomas S. Marr became deaf at the age of three and graduated from Gallaudet College in 1889. He studied architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and returned to Tennessee to work in 1897. Marr hired Holman as a draughtsman in 1904.
